FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kids Take the Lead in Resort Kitchen
~Westin Kierland Resort Kicks Off “Kids in the Kitchen” Program~

PHOENIX/SCOTTSDALE (March 2006) – At The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa this spring and summer, kids will don “chef’s whites” and take direction from Executive Chef Anton Brunbauer and his staff as part of the area’s only “Kids in the Kitchen” interactive cooking program.

Designed for children between ages 5 and 10 (although all ages are welcome), the two-hour “Kids in the Kitchen” program covers all areas of the culinary process from start to finish: safety, cleanliness, ingredient preparation, cooking/baking and, of course, the consumption of a product from a job well done. The session also includes a tour of the many kitchens inside the resort as well as other “back of the house” locations. The activity will cost $25 per junior participant. And, held every Saturday morning starting Memorial Day, Saturday, May 27, through Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 2.

The resort’s Westin Kids Club program will be present at all sessions to help the young-chefs-to-be if necessary. Parents are not required to stay during the session but are welcome to for photos. A chef hat and aprons are included in the per session cost.

Most sessions will take place in the AAA Four Diamond resort’s 15,000-square-foot banquet kitchen, complete with state-of-the-art prep and cooking equipment (enough to provide dinner for more than 2,000 people at one time!). “We’ll be able to accommodate the 15-maximum junior chefs with no problem,” said Chef Brunbauer, who designed the program after spending time years ago in his own kitchen at home with his now grown sons and their friends.

Guests may register at the resort’s Westin Kids Club while making their room reservation or contact the Kids Club directly at 480-624-1242. The program will also continue through summer (exact dates and times forthcoming).

Ramping up in its fourth, the Westin Kierland Experience features the luxury of a Scottsdale resort as well as a well-rounded golf component that together create an all-encompassing resort experience – exclusively in Arizona. There’s nowhere else in Phoenix/Scottsdale to experience Westin’s signature Heavenly Beds® and Heavenly Beds® as well as air-conditioned golf carts and driving range. Set against dramatic desert skies and native plants, The Kierland Golf Club offers a Troon Golf experience with the exclusive Coolwell air-conditioned and aromatic golf carts.

A cool spot for hot days this year will be the resort’s water park. The main activity pool will feature live music and dive-in movies, featuring family-friendly motion pictures on a big screen at the pools. To top off a fun family weekend, guests can also enjoy free summer concerts at the nearby Kierland Commons every Saturday night. Complimentary transportation provided by resort. The resort’s water park encompasses two large pools, hot tubs and various water activities for children. The 900-foot-long river ride offers visitors an exciting trip on inner tubes through realistic reproductions of Arizona rock formations and two adjacent waterfalls. The 110-foot slide carries riders through a variety of twists and turns. There’s also a separate adult pool area with hot tub, also surrounded by cabanas.

The Tumbleweed Kids Club is an exciting 365 day-a-year program for children ages 4-12. Supervised by the resort activities staff, every program is themed around the essence of Arizona and includes games, activities, and of course a splash in the pool and river. Whether it’s a walk in the Sonoran desert, making cowboy bandanas or just reading from the kids library, each child will not only find the experience entertaining, they will learn something too.

The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa opened in November 2002 under the theme “Treasuring the Essence of Arizona.” Westin guests are well cared for, with a lot of unexpected pleasures — including our one-of-a-kind Heavenly Bed and Heavenly Bath innovations. With eight themed restaurants and bars, Agave-The Arizona Spa, the Westin Kids Club, a fun-filled water park and the 27-hole Kierland Golf Club, there is something to appeal to everyone in the family. Plus, the Westin Kierland is a short walk from Kierland Commons, one of the hottest new shopping and dining districts in the Valley.
