Westin Kierland Resort & Spa Creates Cool Summer Experience

Phoenix/Scottsdale (Friday, June 17, 2005) — It's a cool vacation at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa as the resort heads into its third summer season. New this summer will be air-conditioned golf carts at no extra charge at the Kierland Golf Club. Golfers will also stay cool at the covered misted/fanned driving range. The resort will again become “Harry Potter Central” in July teaming up with Barnes & Noble to celebrate the midnight release of “Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince.” Fans can be one of the first to purchase the latest in the series, as well as enjoy activities at the resort and bookstore. Not only will Kierland Commons be the site of its annual Summer Concert Series, but the resort has teamed up with the Westcor-managed property to offer a fun spa and shopping package sure to please and pamper summer guests.

July means Potter Party Time!
Stay for a Spell……..Celebrating the midnight release of “Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince,” The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa invites families to take advantage of its Harry Potter celebration AND be one of the first to purchase the latest in the series at a midnight release party at Kierland Commons’ Barnes & Noble. On Friday, July 15, it’s Harry Potter Party Time at The Westin Kierland. package will include a one-night stay (limit 4 people per room), a special Harry Potter dive-in movie and several other Harry Potter-themed activities. Youngsters also will receive a Harry Potter gift bag upon check in. Following the movie, Harry Potter fans can take the “Hogwart’s Express” shuttle to nearby Barnes & Noble at Kierland Commons for a special midnight book release party. Barnes & Noble will host a variety of activities prior to the release.

SUMMER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Enjoy S’more roasting in Dreamweaver’s Canyon courtyard on the weekends as Meadowlark performs every Friday and Saturday, 7:30-10:30 pm, in Dreamweaver’s. Meadowlark is composed of guitarist Rick Cyge and flutist Lynn Trombetta, who meld influences as diverse as Celtic, African and Mediterranean for a sound that is uniquely their own. Their music is the perfect medium to allow guests to relax, unwind and enjoy the starry night.

Located adjacent to Dreamweaver’s Canyon, Nellie Cashman’s Café will continue its monthly themed specials on Friday & Saturday nights. On these evenings, a special Kids Club activity area will be set up in Nellie's, featuring a kids buffet and supervised activities for the little ones while parents enjoy dinner. (The regular Nellie Cashman’s menu of Southwestern-Mediterranean styled items will be available.) Patio seating is available.

Poolside Entertainment on Saturdays 4:30-7:30 pm. Dive-In Movies on Friday and Saturday nights at the resort's waterpark, which features a flowing river ride, water slide, volleyball beach court, wade-in pool and activity pool. Dive-in movies begin Memorial Day weekend (Friday, May 27) and go through Labor Day weekend (Sunday, September 4). On Memorial and Labor Day, guests will get and extra movie night on Sunday!

A/C Golf Carts – Beginning Memorial Day, The Kierland Golf Club will offer summer golfers the ultimate in luxury: air-conditioned golf carts and a misted/fanned driving range! Be one of the first to experience cool, cool golf in Arizona this summer. The Coolwell a/c system cools the air by as much as 50 degrees, reducing a sweltering 115-degree afternoon in Phoenix to a pleasant 65 to 70-degree environment. It’s not an evaporative cooler or misting system. In fact, its patented technology actually strips moisture from the air. The unit directs cool, dry air to the back of the neck and reduces the all-around humidity inside the cart. It’s designed so each player is cooled individually by their own device. In addition, storage for beverages will be cooled by the same system. Golfers will also be able to utilize a specially designed aroma cartridge that allowing them to enjoy the benefits of aromachology.

Golf Gets Moving – The Westin Kierland is the only resort offering the option of "Segway Golf." For the golf traveler who enjoys raising the bar on the traveling (and golfing) experience, there's a new way to play the game exclusively in Arizona - cruising the links on a Segway Golf Transporter instead of the traditional golf cart. The Segways have been specially designed by Westin Kierland to accommodate the golf bag, refreshment, scorecard, tees and balls.
